Why all my WhatsApp photos have today's date

Because the date was not inside the photo: it was in the file name. WhatsApp puts the date in the name, and the EXIF (the metadata) is lost when the photo is saved or exported. Here you read the real date off the name and write it back — without re-encoding the image.

Nothing leaves your device. This page has no server, no analytics, and nothing is loaded from anywhere outside it. Your photos are read and fixed inside your own browser; then you download the corrected files. The only way out is the payment button: it opens the Stripe site in another tab, and only when you decide to pay.

Take it to your phone, like an app

This page is an app: you can install it on the home screen and open it with one tap, right next to WhatsApp. Once installed it works offline — with no internet at all. The fixing happens inside your own device, so it needs no connection and no signal.

How to add it to the home screen
  • Android (Chrome): tap the three dots at the top right, then Install app (or Add to home screen). If it is not there, open the menu and pick Add to home screen.
  • iPhone (Safari): tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up) and scroll down to Add to Home Screen. On iPhone it has to be Safari — Chrome on iOS does not offer this.
  • On a computer (Chrome/Edge): there is an install icon in the address bar, next to the padlock.

Installing is free and asks for no account, no sign-up and no payment. The fixing still happens on your device: installed or not, the app sends nothing anywhere.

Fix them now

How it works

  1. The file name follows a WhatsApp pattern, like IMG-20260315-WA0001.jpg (also VID-, PTT-, AUD-, STK-) or the iPhone name WhatsApp Image 2026-03-15 at 14.30.45.jpeg. The name carries the day, and sometimes the time too.
  2. The date is read from the name and treated as local time — that is the time on the phone that took the photo. When the name carries no time, the fix uses 12:00 and says so, instead of inventing one.
  3. For JPEG photos the date is written into the EXIF (DateTimeOriginal and CreateDate) without re-encoding the image: every byte of the file is identical except the new metadata block.
  4. For MP4 videos the date is written into the file's own header. Opus has no date field at all: the fix only adjusts the file date and says so. Nothing is faked.
  5. The file's modification date is adjusted too — that is what the file system shows when you sort by date.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe? Does my photo get sent to a server?
No. Your photos never leave your device: this page has no server and sends nothing anywhere. You can load the page, fix your photos and go offline the whole time. The only way out is the Stripe site, and only when you decide to pay — the button opens the payment in another tab. There the payment is Stripe's, on Stripe's site, and the card details go straight to them: this page never sees, never asks for and never records a payment detail.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The page runs in the browser on both. Picking a whole folder is easier on a computer; on a phone you can select several photos at once.
What does it not fix?
Files whose name does not follow the WhatsApp pattern (no date in the name, or an impossible date like day 45). Those files come back unchanged and the page tells you why. Opus audio also only gets the file date adjusted, because the format has no date field.
Why does WhatsApp do this?
To save space, WhatsApp strips the metadata from media and leaves the date only in the file name. The name survives; the metadata often does not. Once the photo is saved under a different name or re-exported, the date is gone.
Does the image lose quality?
No. Nothing is re-encoded: the tool writes the metadata and copies the rest of the file byte for byte. The photo is the same, at the same size.
My photo already had a date. What happens?
By default the old date is kept. If you want to replace it, tick the "overwrite" box — which only appears after the page shows you what is inside your photos and what will be preserved. When you do replace it, the orientation, camera, lens, ISO, location and thumbnail all stay: the fixer writes the new date inside the EXIF that was already there, without wiping the other fields.
What happens when it is not safe to replace the date?
If the photo has a manufacturer block (the MakerNote, which only the camera can rewrite) and no date field, the fixer refuses that photo and returns the file with no change at all, rather than handing you a file with corrupted metadata. The page warns you beforehand and marks the result as "not replaced". You can carry on with the other photos.
Does the fixer ever lose metadata?
No. No path in the product accepts the result without checking: after writing, it reads the file back and compares it field by field with the original. If any field went missing or changed, the write is discarded and the photo comes back untouched. The table shows, file by file, how many metadata fields were preserved.
Is the folder date fixed too?
The modification date is calculated and shown in the table, but the browser download writes the file with today's date — no browser lets you choose otherwise. What is written inside the file (the EXIF) is the real date, and that is what Windows Explorer, Google Photos and your phone read. To fix the folder date as well, move the file after downloading it.

Price

R$ 9,90 per batch ≈ US$ 2 · R$ 24,90 lifetime ≈ US$ 5

You are charged in Brazilian reais (R$), by card. The dollar figure is only an approximate reference for people comparing prices from abroad — you pay in reais, with no conversion and no currency fee.

Paying is optional and today it is a test. The button opens the Stripe site in another tab, and the payment happens there — never on this page. If you don't pay, you still get the complete fix, exactly the same.

Pay one batch — R$ 9,90 Pay unlimited — R$ 24,90

In this release the fix is free and complete: nothing is charged now, and the amounts above are what the product costs once billing is switched on.
